iCloud Mail does not get its own generous silo. Free iCloud is 5 GB shared across Mail, Photos, device backups, and iCloud Drive. When that bar fills, Mail can stop sending, backups fail, and Photos stops uploading — often on the same afternoon.
This guide is the problem spoke next to our iCloud Mail vs Gmail vs Outlook review: free space, Mail Drop, iCloud+, or migrate. Faraday does not open @icloud.com. Provider first, then Faraday — same hop as Sky or AOL.
iCloud is not short on polish. It is short on shared gigabytes.
Why iCloud Mail fills up so fast
Photos and iPhone backups usually eat the 5 GB before mail does. A few years of attachments finish the job. Unlike Gmail's 15 GB or Outlook.com's ~15 GB mail quota, Apple's free tier is a family budget every Apple feature draws from.
How to check iCloud storage
iPhone / iPad: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Storage / Manage Account Storage.
Mac: System Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage (or Storage).
Web: icloud.com → Account Settings → storage breakdown when offered.
Note what is winning: Photos, Backups, Mail, or Drive. Delete the category that is actually full — emptying Mail alone will not fix a Photos-heavy bar.
Free space fast
1. Delete old device backups you no longer own.
2. Optimize Photos or move the library off iCloud if mail is the priority.
3. In Mail, empty Trash and Junk, then delete large attachment threads (sort or search by attachment).
4. iCloud Drive — remove installers, exports, and duplicate Desktop/Documents sync bloat.
After deletes, wait for the meter to refresh before testing send.
Mail Drop vs a real attachment
iCloud Mail attachments are commonly around 20 MB. Larger files go out as Mail Drop links — not as MIME that travels with the message. Gmail is 25 MB. Hotmail / Outlook.com is 20 MB. Faraday on Gmail or Outlook attaches up to 500 MB and still shows an attachment chip on your side. Limits: attachment size guide. Autocomplete loves "icloud mail drop" because people hit this wall constantly.
Should you buy iCloud+?
iCloud+ (50 GB and up) is the right buy if Apple hardware, Hide My Email, and Private Relay are the point of your stack. It is a weak buy if the mailbox is work-shaped and you already need Android or Gmail-class search. More Apple gigabytes do not classify your inbox.
Migrate when cleanup is a monthly chore
Move to Gmail or Outlook if 5 GB keeps returning, Android matters, or mail is a job. Keep @icloud.com for Apple ID and Hide My Email. Import via IMAP with an Apple app-specific password. Overlap for 90 days.
Full comparison and Android IMAP notes: iCloud vs Gmail vs Outlook. Yahoo and Outlook storage cliffs for the same era of leftover addresses: Yahoo storage full, Outlook.com storage full.
Faraday — after Gmail or Outlook
Price: From $12/month billed annually ($14 monthly). One-week trial.
Platform: Web and Mac. Gmail or Outlook only.
Faraday does not connect to iCloud Mail. Free space or migrate first.
iCloud Mail and Apple Mail will not separate a human from an Apple bill from a booking from a newsletter. They give you a private list that shares a 5 GB bar with Photos. Gmail without Faraday is a better list. Faraday processes every message, classifies it, and surfaces what needs you in Glance. No filters. No prompt. Keep @icloud.com in the background for Apple ID. Stop living in a storage warning.
The catch: Faraday is the client after the provider hop — same rule as Sky and AOL. Hotmail skips this hop because Hotmail already is Outlook.
Best for: iCloud users whose "storage full" search is really an inbox-and-platform problem, not a one-time Photos cleanup.
Buying more iCloud+ does not make Mail smarter. It only delays the next warning.
Why is my iCloud Mail storage full?
Usually Photos and backups, not mail alone. Free iCloud is 5 GB shared. Check the storage breakdown before you only delete emails.
Does iCloud Mail Drop use my storage?
Mail Drop sends a link for large files instead of a huge MIME attachment. It does not give you a bigger mailbox. The 5 GB ceiling remains.
Can I use Faraday with iCloud Mail?
Not until the mailbox is Gmail or Outlook. Then Faraday classifies the archive. Details in the iCloud review.
Is iCloud Mail the same as Apple Mail?
No. iCloud Mail is the @icloud.com mailbox. Apple Mail is the Mac/iPhone client. You can keep Apple Mail while moving work mail to Gmail.
Should I upgrade iCloud+ or migrate?
Upgrade if you are staying Apple-personal. Migrate if mail is work, Android matters, or you want Faraday. Hide My Email can stay on iCloud either way.
