When Outlook.com or Hotmail says storage is full, new mail can bounce and sends can fail. Free Outlook.com accounts get 15 GB of mailbox storage, plus a separate 5 GB of Microsoft cloud storage. Going over either one stops mail. That quota fills with years of attachments, newsletter images, and Deleted Items you never emptied.
This is not the same crisis as Yahoo's 1 TB → 20 GB cut — but the symptom is identical: a mailbox that suddenly refuses work. Free space first. Upgrade only if you want to stay in Microsoft forever. Migrate if Gmail is already home. Faraday connects to the Outlook account either way.
Full storage is a quota problem. A full brain is an inbox problem.
Outlook.com / Hotmail storage limits in 2026
Outlook.com / Hotmail free: 15 GB of mailbox storage, plus 5 GB of Microsoft cloud storage. Going over either one stops mail.
Microsoft 365 Personal / Family: larger mail quotas plus OneDrive (plan-dependent).
Work Microsoft 365 / Exchange: set by your admin — often much higher, sometimes capped lower by policy.
Attachments from the device are commonly 20 MB on Outlook.com; bigger files want OneDrive. Faraday on the same account attaches up to 500 MB. Numbers: email attachment size limits.
How to check Outlook.com storage
On the web at outlook.live.com: open Settings (gear) → General / Account → Storage (wording moves occasionally). Or visit account.microsoft.com and open the storage / subscriptions area tied to the Microsoft account that owns the @hotmail.com or @outlook.com address.
On Windows Outlook (new) or Outlook for Mac connected to that account, storage warnings also appear when you are near the ceiling.
What happens when Outlook.com is full
Incoming mail can bounce. Outgoing mail can fail. Deleted Items and Junk still count until you empty them. The 15 GB mailbox and the 5 GB cloud storage are separate counters. Going over either one stops send and receive. A full OneDrive can silence the mailbox even when the mail quota still shows room.
Free up space fast
1. Empty Deleted Items and Junk. Do this first.
2. Sort by size. In outlook.live.com search or filter for large messages; delete the ones with big attachments you no longer need.
3. Clear newsletter piles you will never open. Unsubscribe going forward — deleting alone does not stop the next wave.
4. Download then delete old photo / zip threads you care about keeping offline.
If send still fails after cleanup, wait a few minutes for quota to refresh, then retry.
Should you pay for more Microsoft storage?
Microsoft 365 Personal / Family is reasonable if you already live in Word, Excel, OneDrive, and Outlook. It is a weak reason to stay if the only problem is a chronological Focused Inbox. Paying for more gigabytes does not classify humans, bills, and bookings.
Migrate vs stay
Stay on Outlook / Hotmail if the address is on every recovery form and Microsoft is already work. Free space, then put Faraday on that account.
Move to Gmail if Android, Docs, and Drive are home — migrate Hotmail to Gmail.
Yahoo users hit a different storage cliff (20 GB after 1 TB): Yahoo Mail storage full. iCloud's trap is 5 GB shared with Photos: iCloud Mail storage full.
After cleanup: Faraday on the same Outlook account
Freeing 2 GB gets mail flowing. It does not stop the inbox from becoming another pile of receipts and newsletters.
Faraday connects with Outlook — @hotmail.com included. One-week trial, then $12/month billed annually ($14 monthly). Faraday processes every message, classifies humans, bills, bookings, and newsletters, and extracts the useful bit. Glance is the morning view of what needs you. No filters. No prompt. Attachments up to 500 MB so the next big file does not bounce at 20 MB.
Best for: People who searched Outlook.com storage full because mail stopped — and then realized the long-term problem is living in Focused Inbox.
Quota is temporary. Triage is permanent — unless the client does it.
How much storage does Outlook.com / Hotmail have?
Free Outlook.com mail is 15 GB, plus a separate 5 GB of Microsoft cloud storage. Going over either one stops mail. Microsoft 365 and work Exchange are different, plan- or admin-dependent.
Does Hotmail share storage with Outlook.com?
Hotmail is Outlook.com. Same account, same quota. See is Hotmail still around?
Will emptying Junk free Outlook.com storage?
Yes — Deleted and Junk still count until emptied.
Is OneDrive the same as Outlook.com storage?
No. Mail has its own 15 GB quota. Microsoft cloud storage is a separate 5 GB, shared by OneDrive, Outlook attachments, and Microsoft 365 app files, unless you subscribe. Going over either limit stops Outlook.com mail.
Can Faraday open a full Hotmail mailbox?
Faraday needs the Microsoft account to accept mail again. Free space first, then connect. Faraday does not raise Microsoft's server quota; it upgrades the client on top of a working mailbox.
