# Gmail storage full? What counts toward your 15 GB

Gmail's 15 GB is shared with Drive and Photos, and Spam and Trash count too. How to check usage, find the messages eating space, empty Trash, and when to buy Google One.

Gmail does not give you 15 GB of email. It gives you **15 GB shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos** — and **Spam and Trash count toward it**. That is why the meter can be full when your inbox looks ordinary.

Here is what actually consumes the quota, how to find the messages that do, and when paying Google is cheaper than another afternoon of deleting.

> You are not out of email storage. You are out of Google storage.

## What counts toward Gmail's 15 GB

• **Gmail messages and attachments**, including everything in Spam and Trash.
• **Google Drive files**, including Drive Trash and hidden app data.
• **Google Photos**: Original quality always counts; Storage saver and Express backups made after June 1, 2021 count. High-quality backups from before that date do not.
• **Meet recordings**.
• **Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Drawings, Recorder, Vids, and Pics** created or edited after June 1, 2021.
• **WhatsApp and Android device backups**, where enabled.

What does not count: files shared with you (unless you copy them), and pre-June-2021 High-quality Photos.

## How to check what is using your storage

1. Go to **drive.google.com/settings/storage** or **google.com/settings/storage**.
2. Google breaks usage into Drive, Gmail, and Photos.
3. In Gmail, the footer of the inbox also shows a usage bar and a link to the detail page.

If Photos is the biggest slice, deleting email will not move the number much. Fix the right bucket first.

## The Gmail searches that find the heavy mail

Paste these into Gmail search:

• larger:25M — any message over 25 MB.
• has:attachment larger:10M — the usual culprit.
• filename:pdf larger:5M — scanned contracts and statements.
• older_than:5y — archive you have not opened in years.
• in:trash and in:spam — mail you already deleted but never purged.
• category:promotions older_than:1y — newsletters with images.

## Free space fast, in the right order

1. **Empty Trash and Spam.** Deleted mail still occupies quota until it is purged. This is the fastest win and the one people skip.
2. **Delete one large-attachment search at a time.** Select all, delete, then empty Trash again.
3. **Check Drive Trash.** Files deleted months ago can still be sitting there.
4. **Check Photos.** If you backed up originals you no longer need, that is often tens of GB.
5. **Stop the refill.** Unsubscribe from the newsletters you never read, and filter the rest out of the inbox: [Gmail filters and labels](https://faraday.email/blog/gmail-filters-labels-rules-guide).

## What happens when Gmail is over quota

You can still sign in, but you cannot send or receive new mail, and Drive and Photos stop accepting uploads. Google also warns that content may be removed if an account stays over quota for two years or more. This is not a cosmetic warning.

## Should you pay for Google One?

If cleanup buys you a month and then you are full again, stop cleaning. Google One starts around $2/month for 100 GB in the US, with 200 GB and 2 TB tiers above it. Paying for storage you actually use is cheaper than an afternoon of deleting receipts every quarter.

The alternative is to move the mailbox to a provider with more headroom, but that trades one quota for another. Yahoo is 20 GB in the US and Canada (15 GB in the UK and EU), Outlook.com is 15 GB, iCloud is 5 GB shared. ## Where Faraday fits

Faraday is an email client, not a storage plan. It does not add gigabytes, and archiving in Faraday does not delete the message from Gmail. What it does is keep the inbox from becoming the archive: mail is classified, bills and bookings are pulled out, and the list you open is the list that needs you. If storage is the problem, clean or pay first. If the inbox is the problem, [Faraday](https://faraday.email/) is the fix.

## Why is my Gmail storage full when my inbox is empty?

Because Photos, Drive, Spam, and Trash share the same 15 GB. Check google.com/settings/storage to see which bucket is full.

## Does deleting emails in Gmail free space immediately?

Only after you empty Trash. Until then the messages still count.

## Does Gmail have 15 GB or 1 TB?

Free Gmail has 15 GB shared across Google apps. Google Workspace and Google One plans increase it.

## How do I find the largest emails in Gmail?

Search larger:25M, or has:attachment larger:10M for a wider net, then sort and delete in bulk.

## Does Faraday free up Gmail storage?

No. Faraday is a client. It changes how you read and act on mail, not your Google quota.
