The **best email app for Android in 2026 is Gmail** for most people. It is already on the phone, spam filtering is still the best in the category, and Drive / Calendar / Meet are one tap away. Pick **Outlook** if work is Microsoft 365 or you need Gmail and Outlook in one app. Pick **Thunderbird** (formerly K-9) if you want open-source IMAP and no vendor inbox.

Faraday is not an Android email app yet. It is on the web, on Mac, and on iPhone (TestFlight), with Android in development. Do not install a Play Store listing named Faraday expecting this product — that is a different app. iPhone ranking: [best email app for iPhone](https://faraday.email/blog/best-email-app-for-iphone-2026). > On Android, use Gmail or Outlook today. Faraday is the inbox after you outgrow a swipeable list.

## 1. Gmail — best for most Android users

**Best for:** anyone whose address is already @gmail.com or Google Workspace.

It is the default, it is free, and it is still the strongest spam filter on a phone. Search works. Attachments go to Drive when they exceed 25 MB. The cost is the pile: Promotions and Updates hide mail, and nothing in the list tells you the amount on a bill or the time of a booking. Faraday on the web sits on this same Gmail account when you want that layer.

## 2. Outlook — best for Microsoft 365 on Android

**Best for:** Hotmail / Outlook.com / work Microsoft 365, or mixed Gmail + Outlook in one app.

Focused Inbox is the usual complaint. Calendar is the usual reason to stay. If the mailbox is Outlook, Faraday signs in with the same Microsoft account on web and Mac — the Android Faraday build is still ahead.

## 3. Thunderbird (K-9) — best free open-source Android client

**Best for:** IMAP die-hards who do not want Google or Microsoft as the client.

Thunderbird on Android is the continuation of K-9 Mail. It is free, local-first, and honest. It is also a list you manage by hand. If that is why you are shopping, the desktop step-up is [Thunderbird alternatives](https://faraday.email/blog/thunderbird-alternatives-2026).

## 4. Spark — smart inbox, privacy tradeoffs

**Best for:** people who want a shared inbox and delay send on a phone.

Spark's free tier still sorts. The catch is the same as it always was: a third-party client that reads the mailbox. Fine for some; a non-starter for others. Alternatives: [Spark Mail alternatives](https://faraday.email/blog/best-spark-mail-alternatives-2026).

## 5. Edison Mail — swipey, ad-supported

Fast gestures, a clean list, and a business model that has always made privacy people nervous. Use it if you like the UI and accept the trade. Do not use it as a work vault.

## Where Faraday fits (and where it does not)

[Faraday](https://faraday.email/) is the client for Gmail and Outlook that classifies mail instead of dumping it into one list. On Android, that client is **not in Play Store yet**. Use Gmail or Outlook on the phone today. Use Faraday on the web, Mac, or iPhone TestFlight. When the Android build is ready, it gets its own note — same as [the phone apps post](https://faraday.email/blog/faraday-ios-android-mobile-apps-2026).

## What is the best email app for Android in 2026?

Gmail for most people. Outlook if you live in Microsoft 365. Thunderbird if you want open-source IMAP.

## What is the best free email app for Android?

## Is Faraday on Google Play?

No. Faraday for Android is in development. Faraday for iPhone is on TestFlight. Ignore unrelated Play / F-Droid listings that share the name.

Outlook if the mix is Microsoft + Gmail. Gmail if they are all Google. Faraday handles multiple Gmail and Outlook accounts on web and Mac.

## Gmail vs Outlook vs Spark on Android — which should I use?

Gmail if the address is Google. Outlook if the address is Microsoft. Spark only if you want its shared inbox and you are fine with a third-party client.
