AOL Mail not receiving emails? Check Spam, filters, blocked senders, full storage, app passwords / IMAP, then migrate to Gmail if it keeps failing.

AOL Mail not receiving emails usually means the message is already in the account — just not in the folder you are staring at — or the app lost permission to fetch it. @aol.com and many @verizon.net addresses run on AOL Mail, so this guide covers both.

Walk the fixes in technician order: webmail first, then Spam and filters, then storage, then third-party apps. If the mailbox keeps failing after that, stop patching and [move to Gmail](https://faraday.email/blog/how-to-migrate-from-aol-mail-to-gmail-2026).

## Quick-fix checklist

1. Open **mail.aol.com** in a browser — not the app.
2. Search the missing sender across Inbox, Spam, and Archive.
3. Send yourself a test from Gmail or another account.
4. Check filters / blocked addresses.
5. Confirm the account is not over storage.
6. If webmail works but the phone does not, fix IMAP / app password.
7. If nothing arrives anywhere, check whether AOL or the sender is having an outage.

## First, find out where it is broken

**1. Open AOL Mail in a web browser** at mail.aol.com. If mail arrives on the web but not in your phone or desktop app, the problem is the *app*, not the account (jump to the third-party app section).

**2. Send yourself a test email** from another account. If it never lands — and is not in Spam — the problem is account-side or sender-side.

**3. Search by sender** for the missing message. AOL's folders hide more mail than people expect.

## 1. Check Spam, Archive, and Trash

Open **Spam** first. Mark good mail as Not Spam and move it to Inbox. Then check Archive and Trash for the last 30 days. If only one sender is missing, their mail is often filtered — not blocked at the server.

## 2. Look for a filter or blocked address

In AOL Mail settings, open filters / blocked addresses:

• Delete any filter that matches the missing sender or subject and sends mail to Trash or Archive.
• Remove the sender (and their domain) from blocked lists.
• If you blocked Gmail wholesale during a spam wave, you will not get bank resets from @gmail.com either.

Save, then send another test.

## 3. A full AOL mailbox

A full AOL mailbox can slow or stop new delivery the same way Yahoo and Outlook.com do. Delete large attachments, empty Trash and Spam, and remove old newsletters. If you are constantly near the ceiling, that is a migration signal — not a storage tip loop. ## 4. Check whether forwarding is on

If forwarding is enabled to an old address you no longer read, new mail may leave AOL as soon as it arrives. Turn forwarding off or point it at an inbox you actually open. Many AOL accounts never expose a clean Forwarding tab — if you cannot find it, skip to app / IMAP checks rather than inventing settings that are not there.

## 5. Make sure the account is not locked

Unusual sign-in patterns, unpaid legacy dial-up remnants, or recovery loops can lock sending/receiving until you pass AOL / Yahoo account recovery. Use the official recovery flow. Do not enter your password on a random "AOL unlock" page from email.

## 6. See whether AOL Mail is down

Check AOL's status / help pages and a third-party outage board. If AOL is down, waiting is faster than changing IMAP settings. If only one sender fails while everyone else arrives, the outage is on their side.

## 7. AOL not receiving emails on iPhone or in another app

When webmail works and the app does not:

• Remove the AOL account from the phone and re-add it.
• Prefer the official AOL app, or IMAP with imap.aol.com port **993** (SSL) and SMTP smtp.aol.com port **465** or **587**.
• Create an **app password** if two-step verification is on — your normal AOL password will fail in Outlook, Apple Mail, and Thunderbird.
• On Apple Mail, delete the account, reboot, re-add; stale tokens are a common silent-fetch failure.

Yahoo has the same app-password failure mode: [Yahoo Mail not receiving emails](https://faraday.email/blog/yahoo-mail-not-receiving-emails-2026).

## 8. When the problem is on the sender's side

Ask them to resend, check their Sent folder, and confirm they typed @aol.com correctly (not @aol.co or an old AIM screen name). Corporate servers sometimes reject legacy consumer domains. If Gmail→AOL specifically fails, have them try without links/attachments first, then check whether your address is on a suppression list.

## When it keeps happening

If you have cleared Spam, filters, storage, and app passwords and mail still vanishes, the inbox is the product failure — not your patience. Migrate to Gmail (or Outlook), keep @aol.com forwarding or POP fetch during the transition, and run daily mail in a client that classifies instead of dumping everything into one list.

## Where Faraday fits

[Faraday](https://faraday.email/) does not sign in to AOL directly. Move the mailbox to Gmail or Outlook, then connect Faraday. You keep the archive; you stop babysitting Spam tabs. ## Why is my AOL Mail not receiving emails all of a sudden?

Usually Spam, a new filter, a full mailbox, or an app that lost its password — not a silent AOL shutdown.

## Why is AOL not receiving emails from Gmail?

Check blocked addresses and Spam for @gmail.com, then ask the Gmail sender to confirm the message left their Sent folder.

## Why is my AOL not receiving emails on my iPhone?

Webmail works and the phone does not → re-add the account with IMAP and an app password.

## Why am I not getting verification emails on AOL?

Search Spam for the brand name, unblock the sender, and wait a few minutes — many verification systems retry slowly to legacy domains.

## Does a full AOL mailbox stop incoming emails?

It can. Free space in Trash/Spam and delete large attachments before you chase IMAP settings.

## What are the correct AOL IMAP and SMTP settings?

IMAP imap.aol.com 993 SSL; SMTP smtp.aol.com 465 or 587; username = full email; use an app password with 2FA.
